An updated 'alternative' version of the 'Jekyll and Hyde' story, written by Paddy
Cheyefsky from his own novel. Altered States does for science, what Cheyefsky's
Network drama did for television. But, for some reason he didn't like the
finished film, and had his name removed from the credits.
Director Ken Russell's spectaular SF thriller stars William Hurt (in his first screen
role) as apparently mad scientist, Eddie Jessop, whose dangerous experiments with
'magic mushrooms' and sensory deprivation, lead to serious trouble for him, his wife,
his research associates, and their collective sanity. Jessop is obsessed with finding
the 'Meaning of Life' and to this end, he subjects himself to ever longer periods in
the isolation tank. It begins in the sixties with creepy hallucinations, and ends
twenty years later, with an incredible journey through the inner mind, back in time
to the first, primitive human 'self'. Like a kind of '2001' trip - inside the head!
Altered States is almost overloaded with stunning images and sound. It
assaults eyes and ears with amazing special effects by Chuck Gaspar and makeup
genius Dick (The Exorcist) Smith. The crystal clear photography by Jordan
Cronenweth (who later worked as cameraman on Blade Runner) is edited at
lightspeed to sensational effect, as Jessop comes face-to-face with the Ultimate
Truth. If you haven't seen this at least twice, you're missing out!
