DOWSE Guide to the Movies
by Tony Lee editor of Pigasus Press

American History X

114 minutes (18) EV
Director: Tony Kaye
review by Steven Hampton

Gruelling antiracist tract, starring Edwards Norton and Furlong as young men mesmerised by a vile neo-Nazi (played by Stacy Keach). Great performances from Elliott Gould, Beverly D'Angelo, and Star Trek: DS9 captain Avery Brooks, in a supporting cast that includes Fairuza Balk and blonde Jennifer Lien (late of Star Trek Voyager). After release from prison for brutal murder, Norton's character is a changed man and attempts to guide his younger brother (Furlong) away from the evil influence of a white supremacist group. Shot largely in monochrome, this drama's numerous flashbacks detail a sanitised but harsh prison regime where bigotry is beaten out of the hatemonger, ironically yet predictably not by gangs of black inmates, but by his own kind.
