DOWSE Guide to the Movies
by Tony Lee editor of Pigasus Press

Analyze This

99 minutes (15) Warner
Director: Harold Ramis
review by Rob Marshall

Forget TV's The Sopranos, this wacky comedy drama sees troubled wiseguy Robert De Niro consult psychotherapist Billy Crystal with very amusing results. The bipolar casting works fine in the scenes where De Niro's overanxious mafia don explains his deepest feelings to Crystal's easygoing New York Jew and, despite the predictably emotional and violent outbursts from both leads, this often witty farce is more 'cry hard' than Die Hard. That said, with such coldly penned lines as "If I talk to you and you turn me into a fag, I'm gonna kill ya!" it's a wonder this film is so effective a spoof of the stereotypes concerned. If I had to choose, it is clear that Crystal walks off with the acting honours, if only because De Niro's attempts at sobbing sound more like someone with a breathless cough than genuine misery. See this funny movie, by all means, but don't expect too much of it.
