Beast Cops

115 minutes (18) Hong Kong
Director: Gordon Chan & Dante Lam
review by Jeff Young

It cleaned up at the Hong Kong film awards in 1999, and this astonishingly violent drama of gangsters against gangbusters features uniformly excellent performances (from a cast unknown beyond the HK scene), and some of the bloodiest fight scenes ever staged outside of your basic serial killer horror shocker. Though much of the street action has the feel of fly-on-the-wall documentary, the authentic seeming script about a gambling cop's confrontations with both his new partner and warring factions of HK organised crime, does field measures of black humour and fierce emotion. The revenge attack at the film's climax amounts to mini-horror flick all by itself. Could anything but a beast cop survive all that punishment? At times, this makes nearly all similarly themed US thrillers look tame in comparison. The video includes the original cinema trailer.
