DOWSE Guide to the Movies
by Tony Lee editor of Pigasus Press

Cube

87 minutes (15) First Independent
Director: Vincenzo Natali
review by Steven Hampton

The Hellraiser movies feature a puzzle box that opens the door to 'Hell'. This excellent, low-budget SF mystery thriller puts a mixed group of protagonists inside a huge maze of interlinked rooms, some of which have lethal traps. Who are they? Why are they here? (What's the purpose of life?) Are they victims of government conspiracy... alien experiment...or just a sick joke? Although the answers are not easily obtained or (be warned) made entirely clear by the end, Cube is one of the most intelligent and suspenseful recent genre movies I have seen.
