DOWSE Guide to the Movies
by Tony Lee editor of Pigasus Press

Drop Dead Gorgeous

94 minutes (15) Icon/Warner
Director: Michael Patrick Jann
review by Jeff Young

Wacky pseudo-documentary about beauty pageant 'American Teen Princess'. Features over-the-top performances by Kirstie Alley and Ellen Barkin, as pushy, fiercely driven mothers of Denise (The World Is Not Enough) Richards and Kirsten Dunst (from Interview With The Vampire).
"If they ask you to take your top off, get the money first" is Mom's advice to contestant daughter. From catfights to theft and murder, Alley will try anything so her girl wins! Fitfully amusing, this does evoke the brisk tawdriness of such events, but it's not half as cruel as it should have been.
