DOWSE Guide to the Movies
by Tony Lee editor of Pigasus Press

Goodbye Lover

Director: Roland Joffé
97 minutes Warner
review by Christopher Geary

Modern noir, romantic comedy which sees bad girl Patricia Arquette do for Don Johnson, and TV comedienne Ellen DeGeneres upstage everyone as the wisecracking, interminably rude, homicide detective assigned to the murder case. Likeable as all of this is, the jokes are not really all that funny and the drama is quite a letdown considering the calibre of all those involved. Arquette sports some nifty, fetishistic outfits though, and, as usual, Johnson appears to enjoy himself rather more than is morally appropriate, or fitting, for his character.
