DOWSE Guide to the Movies
by Tony Lee editor of Pigasus Press

A History Of Horror

various - Silvascreen FILMXCD 331

A double helping of horror soundtracks ranging from the rare to the (almost) welcome! The album is in chronological order, kicking off with the 1921 film, Nosferatu, with the Overture Of Nosferatu. The second album concludes with 1999'a The Ninth Gate, with Vocalise. Inbetween these bookends, we get classics such as Halloween, The Omen, The Devil Rides Out, Dracula, The Bride Of Frankenstein, The Shining, Poltergeist and Hellraiser. In and amongst these we are also treated to a few rare pieces from films such as Peeping Tom, Horrors Of The Black Museum, Suspira, and Lighthouse. I know it's only one track, but the appearance of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells, from The Exorcist, makes for a welcome addition, and whilst there are one or two that suffer similarities (it is, after all, horror), the album's rather a good collection. Monster!
