DOWSE Guide to the Movies
by Tony Lee editor of Pigasus Press

Mickey Blue Eyes

Director: Kelly Makin
98 minutes (PG) widescreen 1.95:1 Warner
review by Tony Lee

Hugh Grant doing his usual English buffoon in America is about the only reason to see this romanticised gangster comedy. He plays an auctioneer who proposes to a mobster's daughter (Jeanne Tripplehorn, wholly miscast, I thought) and only then does he find out that her family are Sicilians with influence over incompetent deliverymen and an interest in clever money laundering rackets.
It's Married To The Mob with role reversal, with a double bluff ending filched from The Sting and, honestly, not very funny. James Caan mugs appropriately as the gun-toting father of the bride, and there's the expected quota of laughs at the expense of Grant's accent and loony Mafioso killers. Analyze This was rather better and - certainly - had far more original material.
DVD extras: standard. Original trailer, scene access in 33 chapters, the director's commentary, choice of four subtitled languages.
