A lame spin-off the mini-cycle of mentally impaired people dramas that appeared in the
wake of the excellent Rain Man, this sugary tale is based on the a true story
about a 28-year-old autistic woman (portrayed by Oscar nominee Elisabeth Shue) who
undergoes experimental neurosurgery in an effort to kickstart her child-like mind. The
plot really concerns the woman's difficult relationship with her estranged brother,
when she gets released into his custody after the institutional care home (where she's
spent most of her life) closes down.
There are the expected humorous scenes of Molly stripping off and waltzing
into her brother's important business meetings, Molly wrecking havoc at the seafood
restaurant because she thinks the patrons want to eat someone's pet lobster, Molly
making trouble for all concerned at the supermarket. However, this is all entirely
predictable. If you are familiar with the conventions of disease-of-the-week TV movies,
you'll find this shallow, empty and condescending to genuinely afflicted people. I
guess it's okay to laugh at the loony every now and then, but films like this don't
really present an accurate picture of what living with mental disability is like on a
daily basis. The result is often boring and crass, and even when Molly does attempt a
degree of realism, it just ends up seeming socially irresponsible.
