DOWSE movie guide review of The Negotiator

The Negotiator
Director: F. Gary Gray
134 minutes (15) Warner retail
review by Steven Hampton

Neatly structured siege drama in which top cop Samuel Jackson takes a bunch of hostages inside a federal office building, and demands that the corrupt officers who have framed him for the murder of his partner confess. Outsider Kevin Spacey is called in to settle things but there are lots of heavily armed policemen on the scene who'd prefer to see Jackson die, with his captives, in a blaze of gunfire. The tension is well strung out for over an hour and a half of the film, and although the outcome is never in any doubt, mystery fans should enjoy guessing who's masterminded the plot to steal money from a pension fund, and which of Jackson's colleagues are on the take. Unlike many recent cop films, this one isn't obsessed with technology. It boasts a strong script and thrilling performances from all concerned. Highly recommended.
