Quatermass And The Pit: The Film Music Of Tristram Cary

Cloud Nine Records CNS 5009

Can't say that I'd ever heard of Tristram Cary before, though I gather from the sleevenotes that he was a respected pioneer of electronic and experimental music, concert musician and lecturer in musical theory.
Somewhere along the line Cary also began to provide music for British films, starting with The Ladykillers, no less! This collection, the first recognising a forgotten talent of the British film industry centres on the music and electronic soundscapes he created for Quatermass And The Pit.
Sadly, much of it didn't make it to the finished film and the tracks on this CD come directly from the composers own archive, so the sound quality is slightly muted. The other films (more conventionally orchestrated) on the CD include The Flesh Is Weak, A Twist Of Sand, Sammy Going South, and Tread Softly Stranger. Apart from 'Quatermass' fans this album is likely only to appeal to soundtrack collectors.
