DOWSE movie guide review of Ronin

Ronin
Director: John Frankenheimer
120 minutes (15) MGM retail
review by Rob Marshall

It may not be the best espionage and caper movie crossover ever made, but Ronin is well produced, and its many car chases alone are very nearly worth seeing the film for. The mutual admiration between aged spies played by Robert De Niro and Jean (Leon) Reno is good, also. The rest? Ah, well, it doesn't really matter in terms of action cinema. De Niro gets shot and supervises, without benefit of anaesthetic, the surgery to remove a bullet from his side. Jonathan Pryce pops up as a sinister IRA agent, and Sean Bean gets bounced out early on for being a fraud when it comes to the tough world of international hired guns. See it for De Niro, Reno, and the ultimate in French road rage!
