DOWSE Guide to the Movies
by Tony Lee editor of Pigasus Press

The Trench

112 minutes (15)
Director: William Boyd
review by Ian Shutter

Prior to the Battle of the Somme, frontline troops prepare, nervously, stoically, or not at all well, to face the enemy. Lots of blood in the mud, and unconscionable tragedy as hordes of young recruits are casually slaughtered by snipers in a lush green field, this is a curiously affected, low-budget British drama, which, so promptly after the commendable Regeneration and the superior Saving Private Ryan, seems more exploitative of their success than it actually is.
Watchable? Yes, but on the dull side for a film of such a momentous history lesson.
